Mr. Tony Sugiarta

Mr. Tony Sugiarta is the Director and Curator of aNERDgallery, a Singapore-based art platform specialising in showcasing contemporary artworks related to Indonesian batik and woven textiles. Tony curates heritage-based and contemporary textile art exhibitions that ignite discussions on contemporary issues such as cultural appreciation and sustainability in textile production.

 

Notable exhibitions curated by Tony include inVISIBLE: Exploring and Redefining Femininity through Batik (2018), 1+1 = Infinity: A Collaborative Digital Batik Art (2020), Reading Textiles, Weaving New Narratives (2021, as part of the ASEF e-residency program), Mancapat: An Expression of Life through the Arts of Batik Tenun Gedog (2021), BungaWari: Disentangling the Romance of Sundanese Textiles (2023), Red Phoenix, Blue Dragon: The Magical Spectrum of Batik Lasem (2023), Asam di Gunung, Garam di Laut: A Kain of Marriage (2024), and ARTIS(AN): Celebrating The Hybrid Identities of Contemporary Creatives (2024).

aNERDgallery is a Singapore-based art platform that specialises in showcasing contemporary artworks and new narratives rooted in the concepts, techniques, and mediums of Indonesian batik and woven textiles. aNERDgallery aims to connect makers and enthusiasts by fostering a deeper understanding of the rich cultural, technological, and historical significance of these enduring art forms.

 

During curated exhibitions, art installations, or space activations, aNERDgallery offers engaging programs, such as workshops and themed textile trips, to spark discussions around the contemporary urgencies in the textile ecosystem. Additionally, aNERDgallery provides arts and textile consultancy services, working on projects ranging from design and technology to data visualisation and community engagement.
